How to Order Coffee in Chinese: 我要一杯咖啡
Order coffee in Mandarin Chinese with 我要一杯, add hot or iced, answer “for here or to go?”, and politely fix a wrong drink. Pinyin and English included.
Start with 我要一杯咖啡
我要一杯咖啡,谢谢。 (Wǒ yào yì bēi kāfēi, xièxie.) means “I'd like a cup of coffee, thanks.” 我要 (wǒ yào) literally means “I want,” but at a counter it is an ordinary, polite way to order. Your tone of voice and the 谢谢 at the end do the polite work.
For tea, swap the drink and try a slightly more formal frame: 请给我一杯茶。 (Qǐng gěi wǒ yì bēi chá.) — “Please give me a cup of tea.” Both 我要 and 请给我 are normal in a café.
When a drink name is hard to pronounce, point at the menu and say 我要这个。 (Wǒ yào zhège.) — “I'll have this one.” That is a real strategy, not a failure.
Add hot, iced, and size
热的 (rè de) means “hot” and 冰的 (bīng de) means “iced.” Put the word right before the drink: 一杯冰美式 (yì bēi bīng měishì) — “an iced Americano,” or 一杯热拿铁 (yì bēi rè nátiě) — “a hot latte.” Many chains use 中杯 (zhōng bēi), 大杯 (dà bēi), and 超大杯 (chāo dà bēi) for sizes, but the exact names vary, so read the menu or point.
If you receive the wrong drink, be calm and specific: 不好意思,我点的是冰咖啡。 (Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ diǎn de shì bīng kāfēi.) — “Sorry, I ordered an iced coffee.” Then ask 可以帮我换成冰咖啡吗? (Kěyǐ bāng wǒ huàn chéng bīng kāfēi ma?) — “Could you change it to an iced coffee for me?”
A short café conversation
A: 你好,喝点什么?
Nǐ hǎo, hē diǎn shénme?
“Hi, what would you like to drink?”
B: 我要一杯冰拿铁,中杯,谢谢。
Wǒ yào yì bēi bīng nátiě, zhōng bēi, xièxie.
“I'd like an iced latte, medium, thanks.”
A: 在这儿喝还是带走?
Zài zhèr hē háishi dàizǒu?
“For here or to go?”
B: 带走。
Dàizǒu.
“To go.”
Common mistakes
Dropping the measure word. Chinese does not say 一咖啡. A number needs a measure word before the noun, and for a drink in a cup that word is 杯 (bēi): 一杯咖啡, 两杯茶 (liǎng bēi chá). Use 两, not 二, for “two” before a measure word.
Flattening the tones in 咖啡. Kāfēi is two high, level first tones. Keep both syllables high instead of letting the second drop the way English “coffee” does.
Adding 吗 to an order. 我要一杯咖啡吗 turns your order into an odd yes-no question. 吗 belongs at the end of real questions such as 可以帮我换吗?
Speaking practice
Say one full order out loud: greeting, drink with 一杯, hot or iced, and 谢谢. Then answer “for here or to go?” with 在这儿喝 or 带走 without restarting your order. Repeat with 两杯 and a different drink. Finally, practice the polite correction line until you can say it without reading.
