How to Answer “Ça va ?” in French: How Are You and Good Replies

Ask and answer how are you in French: ça va ?, comment allez-vous ? and comment ça va ?, with replies from très bien to bof, and why je suis bien is the wrong answer.

Three ways to ask

Comment vas-tu ? exists but sounds rather written; in conversation people usually say Ça va ? or Tu vas bien ?

How to answer

The simplest reply is to echo the question: Ça va. — “I'm fine.” Then return it: Ça va, et toi ? or Ça va, et vous ?

Other answers, from good to not great:

A short exchange in the hallway

A: Bonjour ! Comment allez-vous aujourd'hui ?
“Hello! How are you today?”

B: Je vais bien, merci. Et vous ?
“I'm well, thank you. And you?”

A: Ça va, un peu fatigué. Vous avez bien dormi avec la chaleur ?
“I'm OK, a little tired. Did you sleep well with the heat?”

B: Pas très bien, il faisait chaud. Mais ça va !
“Not very well, it was hot. But I'm fine!”

A: Bon, bonne journée alors !
“Well, have a good day then!”

Pronunciation tips

Ça is just “sa”: the cedilla under the c makes it an s sound. Say ça va as one quick unit, rising at the end for the question and falling for the answer. Comment allez-vous has a liaison: the t of comment links to allez, “ko-mahn-ta-lay VOO.” In fatigué, the final é is a clear “ay.”

Register and politeness

Match the form you were asked with: et vous ? after comment allez-vous ? and et toi ? after a casual ça va ? from a friend. In shops, staff usually say Bonjour only; you don't need to ask how they are. Like “how are you” in English, ça va ? usually expects a short answer, not a full report.

Common mistakes

Je suis bien. In French this does not mean “I'm fine”; it suggests being comfortable where you are. Say je vais bien or ça va.

Answering bien alone to comment allez-vous ? It is understandable, but je vais bien, merci sounds more complete.

Forgetting to ask back. A reply without et vous ? or et toi ? can feel abrupt.

Speaking practice

Practice a quick loop: ask ça va ?, answer ça va, et toi ?, then answer again with a different reply. Do the same with comment allez-vous ? and je vais bien, merci, et vous ? Switch between tu and vous until the change is automatic.
